I’ve been so fortunate to connect with people in my local community lately, serendipitously. This intricate hand crocheted coverlet in-progress came to me by someone who inherited it from her great grandmother; this piece dates back to at least the mid-19th century, and was made right here in Vermont. Judy (the great granddaughter, now in her 70s), just wanted to see this family heirloom used and loved, in whatever form that would take.
This sleeveless top has a scoop neck on one side, and a slightly deeper scoop neck on the other - either neckline can be worn in the front. It is perfect to wear on its own or layered over a long sleeve in the cooler months. It has been left unlined to keep it breezy and warmer weather appropriate, and while it does have open areas in the weave, I felt comfortable wearing it with a bralette underneath, and did not feel exposed. It also looks lovely over a dress or short sleeved top!
As this piece is made from an antique textile that has lived a full life before becoming a piece of wearable art, it is possible it show it's age in the form of some discolorations and wear to some of the fabrics. These areas are viewed not as defects, but merely giving it character and a nod to its past life. This coverlet has come color variation that is not staining, but rather variation in tones of the thin yarn that was used to construct each star block that was crocheted, which I think is pretty interesting to see that she used whatever was available to her! Please review the photos as returns are not accepted.
